A Second United Nations Charter: Modernizing the UN for a New Generation was released in New York on September 19, 2024. Augusto Lopez-Claros moderated one of three panel conversations that included Professor Andrew Strauss (to his left), Professor Patricia Nogueria Rinaldi (to his right) and sitting across Ambassador Paola Narvaez, Ambassador Martin Kimani and Professor David Passarelli. This panel focused on Updating and Upgrading Existing UN Institutions.

Augusto Lopez-Claros participated in a Virtual Dialogue with former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark and Inter-Parliamentary Union Secretary General Martin Chungong, moderated by Foreign Policy Managing Editor Ravi Agrawal. The conversation was centered on the theme Global Lessons for a More Resilient Future and covered a range of issues in the aftermath of COVID-19, including questions of social protection, women’s economic and political empowerment, climate change and United Nations reform.

Augusto Lopez-Claros participated in a debate at the Stimson Center in Washington DC on October 11, 2018, co-sponsored by Sweden’s Global Challenges Foundation. The theme of the debate was: “Tweaks or Transformation? New Models and Strategies for Tackling Global Challenges.” Other speakers included: Tarun Chhabra, fellow with the Project on International Order and Strategy at the Brookings Institution; Megan Roberts, Deputy Director at the United Nations Foundation; Richard Ponzio, Director of the Stimson Center’s Just Security 2020 Program; Kate Sullivan, Head of Partnerships at the Global Challenges Foundation; and Brett Schaefer, Jay Kingham Fellow in International Regulatory Affairs at the Heritage Foundation.

At the New Shape Forum (NSF), convened by the Global Challenges Foundation in Stockholm on 27-29 May, Augusto Lopez-Claros, Arthur Dahl and Maja Groff were awarded the New Shape Prize for their proposal “Global Governance and the Emergence of Global Institutions for the 21st Century.” The Foundation considered several thousand proposals submitted from 122 countries, from think-tanks, universities, civil society organizations and individuals. The Prize was intended to stimulate original thinking on the development of new global governance mechanisms and institutions, needed to confront a range of emerging global problems which cannot be solved outside of a framework of enhanced international cooperation. Augusto Lopez-Claros delivered two keynote presentations at the Australian Finance and Banking Conference in Sydney, during the period December 12-14. On December 13 he spoke on “The Problems with Rising Income Inequality” and on December 14 the title of his lecture was: “Dangerous Disparities: The Global Crisis of Gender Inequality.” He was also interviewed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Augusto Lopez-Claros attended the Women Political Leaders Annual Global Summit in Reykjavik and participated in a panel discussion on November 30 on economic and legal dimensions of gender inequality.
